A short chat with Berlin-based artist Nikolas Iturralde.
CC: Where did you grow up?
NI: I grew up between Ecuador and Germany.
CC: What about Berlin? How long have you been living there?
NI: I’ve been living here since 2014.
CC: Can you describe your work in three words?
NI: Visceral, Graphic, Spicy.
CC: Does the dreamy roughness of your pieces connect to the city?
NI: Yes — Berlin feels like a dream you can’t entirely trust. It’s magical, but it can turn sharp quickly. There’s a strange tension in that, and I think that contrast makes its way into my work.
CC: How would you spend a day with friends visiting Berlin?
NI: Lebanese breakfast, loud music, connecting people at the studio.
CC: And the night?
NI: Homemade dinner + party.
CC: One last question — what are you addicted to these days?
NI: Sunlight, corridos, chilis.
